About SugamuxiSugamuxi is one province of Boyacá, Colombia, composed by 13 towns; but the name "Sugamuxi" comes from an ancient Muisca leader's name (Cacique Sugamuxi). In the 16th century, the Spaniards came into the region and began to make big cultural changes in local history.
Cacique Sugamuxi was later re-named by the Spaniards as "Don Alonso" (historical information here). The Sugamuxi province is located in the east wing of the Colombian Andes (see map), with a size of 2,552 km2 (similar to the entire size of Luxembourg), its capital city is Sogamoso, known as the City of the Sun (Muisca ancestral connections), and is made up of 13 of some of the most beautiful colonial towns in Bocyacá. This region is surrounded by great mountains, lakes "in the clouds" (some at 3,800 m high, like 'Siscunsí), unique ecosystems (like the "páramos", with one of these known as the most beautiful in the world -Ocetá-), and offers and array of cultural sites to visit, places to stay, food to taste, activities to do, and people to meet. |
