If you are looking for something special and unique in the region of Sugamuxi, the answer is our ancient Muisca culture. Over 500 years ago, the final indigenous Muisca leader was Sugamuxi. Later, the Spaniards changed the name Sugamuxi to "Don Alonso".
Sogamoso (named after 'Suamox', the community of the sun in Muisca language) was the main religious base for the Muiscas and others. The community of the sun is where a number of central and south american groups would meet after embarking on long trips in order to arrive. They hosted principle community meetings during the solstice and equinox. It's no wonder Sogamoso is known as the "Rome of the Muisca culture'"(the main indigenous hub for discussions and decisions). Don't miss the Temple of the Sun, in Sogamoso! Also, indigenous festivities and ceremonies are celebrated throughout the year, especially during the winter solstice (21/Dec). |
A majority of the towns in Sugamuxi are still known by their original Muisca names, which vary depending on their location and special attributes. Filling these towns are the wise abuelos, old timers, of our region. Make the most of our culture by taking the time to visit and exchange stories with these characters.
